The events that led to the writings of 1 Timothy
Paul was moving about among the the churches he had ministered to earlier, although not back in Syria or
Palestine. The itinerary, if we put Titus and 1 Timothy together, included Crete, Ephesus, Macedonia, and
Nicopolis (in Epirus).
Based on 1:3 (and 1:20), it is probable that Paul and Timothy had been traveling together and came to
Ephesus. When Paul decided to move on to Macedonia, he asked Timothy to stay in Ephesus to minister.
From Macedonia, Paul wrote back to Timothy so that both he and the church would have a written description
of what was to be done. Some suggest that developments in Ephesus had caused Timothy to write or
otherwise send word to Paul, indicating a need for help, but that remains speculation.
Paul’s purposes in writing 1 Timothy
Paul wrote to strengthen Timothy’s hand in resisting false teachings. Some interpreters think Timothy may
have been timid or discouraged and needed a little spine-stiffening. More likely is the suggestion that the
church needed to know what Paul expected of Timothy. The letter may have been written for the sake of both
Timothy and the church.
Paul wrote to provide instruction about administering the affairs of the church. This includes matters of church
order (2:8–15), the qualifications of bishops and deacons
(3:1–13), the program for widows (5:3–18), and other matters.
Paul wrote to challenge Timothy personally about how he should conduct himself in his life and ministry to
the church. Chapter 3:15 expresses this well, and other passages develop the purpose (4:7–8, 12–16; 5:1–2.
21–23; 6:11–14).
The date and place of the writing 1 Timothy
1 Timothy was dated at about A.D. 64 or 65, written from somewhere in Macedonia. The place seems clear
enough (1:3). The date is not so clear, depending on a hypothetical reconstruction of Paul’s movements
between the two Roman imprisonments.
1 Timothy (and Titus) might have been written at any time after Paul was released, depending on when he
went to Ephesus and Macedonia.
